The event is probably bugged. Drops from using Yarn Balls (which include extra Yarn Balls, on average like 1 per 60-90 seconds) seem to be based on clicks and ignore the multiplier. I have run it on 10x multiplier once (didn't want to waste more Balls, so it's a very small sample, hence "probably" and "seem") and got just 3-4 drops, with no extra Yarn balls, when on average I get 3-4 drops from each run at 1x multiplier, with 10 runs usually extending at least to 15, due to Yarn Ball drops.

It is not bugged. Using more than one item never effected drops. It just multiplied the result so using 10 items gets you 10 points per click instead of 1. As noted here Clicking Events using one item at a time gets you the most extra items.

OK, I see it now. I assume, that you are referring to "Using one at a time will give the best results, but take the longest time." I think, this should be edited to be more precise. I also think, that in the description of each event affected it should be noted for the benefit of newish players, that may just jump to the event description for guidance, without checking the main event page.
